Steve's Landing Cruise Feb. 1 - 2, 2003

Marion Herndon, Remedy

Finally Saturday Feb. 1st has arrived. From the number of folks that have called to say "count me in", the party at Steve's should be well attended.

Remedy left her slip and headed out across the lake, and immediately into a thick fog that rolled in out of nowhere.
We headed down the lake and stopped at the Lakewood entrance channel. Couldn't see a thing.

We turned on the Radar and waited for it to warm up. Meanwhile we drifted aimlessly about. Once we got the Radar up we crept to the dock at Sundance Grill and tied up near two other boats.

Mystery was ahead of us and had managed to tie up at 3 Amigos to get fuel before the fog bank set in.

Watergate Fog
On to Marker 2 Gugi stayed put in Clear Lake and waited for the fog to lift.

We also heard from
Tesoro they were still dockside at Lakewood.

Silhouette was way ahead of the pack and was past Marker 2 when the fog enveloped him.

"Do you think we can go?", asked Randy Russell. He was still at Boardwalk in his slip.

"We will go as soon as we can see the both banks of the creek." we announced.

Fifteen minutes later Remedy wanted to go to Steve's. We left our safe mooring behind us and headed out again. It was not bad by Portofino. There we found Rose sideways in the channel.

When we reached Landry's fog and traffic met us. Then fog horns in the distance and thick heavy fog.
Ed watched the Radar and I headed for Marker 2. The rest followed. At Marker 2 we decided to raft up and wait for the stragglers. Meanwhile we tromped from boat to boat and wondered why Flying Dolphin never showed up.

We were joined by four or five GBCA race boats that glided into view just before the fog finally lifted.
It was almost 11:30 AM and off we went like horses leaving the gate. We all wanted to get to Steve's. The weather finally cleared as we arrived at the Houston Ship Channel. We Motor sailed as quickly as we could to make up for the two hours of fog delay. And of course we did not want to miss out on Happy Hour.

The Rose

The trip down was great;  once we made the turn into the ICW at Bolivar Roads, we all put up full sail for the reach to Steve's Landing. Three of the Sailboats had to raft up alongside others because of the great turnout. Don Thomson and Ed Hearon were there to greet us and had figured a way for all of the boats to have shore power. The dock party started as soon as all were connected. Why wait till 5:00?  Parties were held on Shorty and on Remedy due to the large turnout which included several that came by auto and the Bolivar Ferry.

Dinner was a Restaurant wonder... Gloria was our waitress, and she had one helper as the food came out. She wanted no conversation. She directed us, "Sit in the same seat where you order from, and your Dinner and Drinks will appear before you." And that is exactly what she did. Separate Checks... Drinks...  40 people at 6 tables. Wow! Food was Flying out of the kitchen as quickly as Gloria could run.    It was a delightful evening. My thanks to Steve's Landing. Service was Outstanding!

Next morning a walk to the beach was on the agenda.

Along the way we met Bevo, Porky and Mildred.

Breakfast was served on Remedy to all who dropped by. Steve and his shrimper friend Robert had never seen a Sailboat interior so they came aboard and got the tour.

At 10 AM the tide was falling and it was time to get the sails up.

Livestock

At first the wind was 15 Kts about 40 degrees on port. With the tow traffic and occasional puffs it was prudent to have the motor engaged at Low RPMs.

Silhouette, Solar, are ahead.  Tesoro and Flying Dolphin
are behind.

At Bolivar Roads the turn North into East Bay presented a down wind run.

Race Home
It was embarrassing that the 32 foot Mystery romped through the fleet with such overwhelming confidence.

She quickly passed Silhouette overcoming his one mile head start.

Next the 38 foot Hunter Gugi fell to the Nonesuch with only a single sail.

Alas, the 45 foot Hunter Remedy, who had enjoyed a 3/4 mile head start,  was overtaken just before the turn at Red Range to cross the Channel.

Remedy
Mystery

Mystery on a Rampage.

Conditions changed when we crossed the Channel... Winds piped up to 27 Kts and presented a beam reach. The Hunters came back to close the gap.  We were doing 8 knots when we finally caught up. Then suddenly the speed dropped to 6. Marion at the helm called to me "What has happened ... Trim the Sail."  I looked up and saw the main slowly fall to the bimini top. Our race was over. We had suffered a failure of the loop attaching the Main to its halyard.  It was time to secure the main sail and motor home.

It was a Memorable Cruise all around.

In addition to the crews of the boats mentioned above we were joined for dinner by the crews of
Granola II, Annticipation,
Laurial
, Enstedda, Sorciere, MAC, and Christy C IV.

And Now Another View of the Happenings.  Cindy Porterfield came with Randy Russell on Flying Dolphin. It was her first experience on a sailboat. Click here for Sailing Survivor.
