Double Bayou Jan. 13-14 2007

Cruise Leader:  Marion Herndon

It was a very warm and foggy morning. We were able to use our new radar .   We waited at channel marker #2 at 9:30.  Followed by Dock Trauma.  As we approached the Houston Ship Channel at marker 71-72 , Ed called the VTS (Houston Traffic Control).  He was checking any concerned traffic , to see if it was clear to cross.   They were very helpful and took the angst away.

Dock Trauma plows through the fog

We crossed safely in the fog with Dock Trauma .  As we approached Double Bayou Marker 2, we were hailed by La Mariposa.   They were joining the TMCA cruise at Hammerheads.   George and Kathy Danner had a boatful of friends and family along.

Dock Trauma, Remedy and La Mariposa

We docked and enjoyed lunch with everyone.   Food is very plentiful and the oysters disappeared quickly.   La  Mariposa headed back after lunch.

The evening was spent with Doug and Karen Chappell .  Wonderful stories were shared as well as good wine.

Sunday Morning, I awoke and checked the weather.   Same as Saturday morning.   With uncertain weather predicted for Sunday, we decided to leave early.
Remedy was leading the way with Dock Trauma following.   I noticed Dock Trauma too far north.   Radioed him to head to marker 16 immediately, but it was too late.
They were hard aground.   Remedy turned back to assist.  We threw them a towing line, but in trying to pull them off the sandbar, we were temporarily aground also.
Looking back towards Double Bayou, I spied 2 crew boats leaving port.   We hailed them for assistance and they were quick to respond.

After a few minutes, Dock Trauma was once again in deep water........Well.........6-7 feet is luxurious sailing in Galveston Bay.

They joined us for the wonderful trip back to port.   The fog lifted, the Houston Channel was clear of traffic.   Remedy had full main and reefed jib.   The trip home was  glorious.   I had been missing the wonderful feel of a boat close hauled in 20 Kts of wind and flying 8 Kts. across the water.   We said our goodbyes to Dock Trauma and are looking forward to many more  cruises with friends and family.
