Niña Baytown Cruise March 24-25 2007

Marion Herndon ,  Cruise Follower

Cruising north on Galveston Bay to Bayland Marina Saturday, was a calming, restful cruise.  Where were the day sailors????? This cruise was designed especially for you.   Your cruise leader arrived last and had help docking.

TMCA members gathered and boarded the Niña.   We all marveled at the size,  pictures of her construction, and how many miles she has sailed since she left port.  There is a growing appreciation today of the hardships and the tenacity of the crews that sailed these early ships.   Due to coast guard regulations, the Niña does have a VF and life jackets. and I might add a cell phone on board.

The Niña Replica Visits Baytown TX

The Niña has sailed the Great Loop four times.  She is now headed to Lake Charles and then down the Gulf coast .  On to Stuart Florida : up the east coast to Bridgeport, Connecticut and then to the Hudson River: up the Erie Canal and on to Oswego.
Many of our club members have completed this wonderful trip.   None of us would have thought to do so without cell phones, ice makers,,,lap top computers and air conditioning.

The Niña carries a crew of six and all volunteers.   The foundation places ads in papers for adventurous folks.
Miss Ellie (the cook and ticket sales force) and  her son Doc Kaiser, (1st Mate) have been on board for 9 years.  Most folks sign up for one month.  The shortest stay was 4 hours.   That was long enough for the crew hand to stow his gear and get acquainted with his duties.   After which he announced..."I can't live like this and just left.

Those who missed seeing the ship can go on line to TheNina.com.  The cell phone on board is 787-421-04012.   Some of you might want to check on how she is doing.   You can also send money to help finance food and accommodations when they are in port.
