Oak Island, Chambers County - Marion Herndon waded ashore
in the Alligator Infested waters of Double Bayou to rescue an injured
and helpless Spitz. This medium sized dog was mired on the muddy bank where she had managed to struggle to the shore. It is not known how she came to this predicament, but we believe she was hit by a car on the Eagle Road bridge and was knocked into the bayou. ![]() Rescue from the Bayou A dozen of the TMCA
were aboard five dinghys on an excursion from the new Double Bayou
Landing and Marina when we discovered the dog. We were almost 3 miles
up the bayou from Oak Island.
" Oh look, there is a dog on the bank under that tree," I said to Marion, "It looks like it is in trouble." We circled in the bayou and the other dinghys came in close. "Go back," Marion insisted. "I want to help it out" "I'm going... " I replied, just as we were about to collide with John Allisons dinghy. "Get away from there... You have a dog on board," Marion called out to Jim and Doris Lee. "Your dog will frighten it. We will get it out of there." "You be careful, It may have rabies, it may attack," someone said. Marion replied, "I will have to get shots then." We moved in closer to the bank, I shut off the engine and coasted into the low hanging branches of the oak tree. I held them up as Marion went into the shallow water. "Does any one have a towel?" she asked. "Here is a towel" volunteered Chris Blair. Marion waded ashore and gently approached. It took a few minutes for her to reassure the dog. She gently wrapped it in the towel and brought it aboard our dinghy. We spent the next few minutes getting the spiders off Marion and getting the dog comfortably settled. Chris offered a bottle of water and Marion managed to get the dog to take a little. We then headed back to the marina. We stopped twice to ask local residents if they recognized the dog. No Luck either time. |

![]() Once back at the marina I went to the bar and inquired if any one knew the dog. "Little white dog?" volunteered Rick. "Yes," I replied."We found it, injured along the opposite bank up by the bridge" "I know that dog.. It belongs to a cousin. I will take it off your hands." He came down to our boat, visited a while, and told us the dog was named Misty. He assured us he would take care of her. We gave him the dog and he disappeared around the front of the building. The waitress at the restaraunt later found that Rick had abandoned the dog in the parking lot. She called on Marion to save Misty once again. From this point on Rick became known as "The Bad Guy". |
| Marion picked up the dog
and brought her to the back deck of the Marina. There was shade and
water and plenty of attention. Rose Laskoskie, travelling with Philip Kropf, became instantly attached to the dog; she has pets and has cared for animals in distress before. She offered to care for the dog until an owner, or adoptive person, could be found. It would be another day before she could sail back to Clear Lake and make it home. Meanwhile, the dog needed to see a vet. Two local area residents Janet and Louise Lagow called a veterinarian in Anahuac. They ultimately arranged Transportation to a veterinarian in Houston. While we waited we took up a collection to help defray costs of care. The name "Misty" which had been given by "The Bad Guy" was discarded. Rose decided to call the dog "Bayou Baby" in a nod to her roots. Philip Kropf continues the story: -Monday- Rose and I picked the dog
up from the emergency vet place in Houston about 5pm on Monday, after
our return to Portofino and getting the boat put away, etc. Her hip was
in fact dislocated (good diagnosis Marion!) and they had snapped it
back into place and wrapped the leg to keep it immobile while it heals.
We took her to Rose's house where her two cats were, needless to
say, a bit purturbed...but still civil! I guess that this dog, by
being as cute as it is, and being also still in a very subdued state,
did not seem to be much of a threat!
<>- Tuesday in the morning she finally started drinking water and eating dry catfood (we had not yet been to the store for dogfood...) Basically it still pretty much just lay there on the floor, with only very feeble attempts at walking. This dog was I think just totally exhaused from its ordeal! But we did take it outside for some peein' & poopin', and that is always a good sign that things are working properly! She is on pain medication which Rose is manageing to get her to swallow every 12 hours. - Wednesday I guess Rose pretty
much just kept her eye on her all day (cleaning up a couple of
"accidents" when those occurred), until about 4pm when I went back
there to help Rose take her to another vet for a bandage check. We also
had a heartworm test done and that, fortunately, came back negative. A
few other things were checked, and questions asked, and then we brough
her back to Rose's. She was much perkier today than yesterday
and, before going inside, we actually got her to really walk for the
first time any distance on her 3 good legs! She walked maybe 100' ft
down the block and returned, with a couple of rest stops in between!
She has yet to master stairs so she has to be carried into the house.
This evening she also barked a few times (not sure at what!), but which
suggests that that function still works also! When I left in the early
evening she was eating and drinking quite well, including eating a
couple of cheetos that Rose and I were munching on, but which we
shared! I think that she is sleeping very well this
evening from the exertion of her vet visit and her walk. I think in the
next day or so she is really going to start to get quite active!

Rose and Bayou Baby - Rose of course loves the dog, but
it is not at all sure that she will be able to really keep her, so we
are at this point kinda looking for other permanent home possibilities.
If anyone has any good ideas or leads, please reply.
Some of you generously put up the cash ($100) that we gave to Janet to give to the emergency room vet when she took the dog there Sunday afternoon. It cost an additional $299 when we picked her up on Monday, and $68 Wednesday for the checkup and test. There have been some additional contributions to help reimburse Rose for these expenses, and any additional help in this regard would I know be appreciated. Thanks to all!!! By putting our little story of this
rather incredible rescue on the website for all of TMCA to see and read
about, we may be able to get a little bit of help from others too.
