Gene Bammel retired from West Virginia University in 1997, only to take up teaching in a philosophy program at the University of Arizona, where he has been involved in their program on Consciousness Studies. Lei Bammel retired as Director of the WVU Service Learning Program, and has used her retirement years to hone her studies of ancient cultures, ranging from Ancient Egypt, to the Maya and the Native American peoples of the Southwest. Gene and Lei live in Tucson during the winter, and migrate to Vail, Colorado in the summers.

Gene left the community after teaching two years at St. John Fisher in Rochester, completed his Ph.D. at Syracuse, and then taught at Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he met Lei. They moved to West Virginia University in 1975, where, for good or ill, they both eventually became administrators.
